What to Do if You are Injured in a Car Accident: Rule 1 – Get Your Car Out of Harm’s Way
If you or a family member is in an accident the most important thing to do is to make sure that everyone is safe and that no further injuries occur. As a Town Attorney for the Town of Greenwich, I worked closely with the police department. I learned from the officers that the most important thing is to get you vehicle to a safe location. Do not worry about the location of your vehicle if your vehicle is not in a safe place such as the middle of the highway. If your car is in the middle of the road or even on the shoulder of the highway stand off to the side and call 911 for assistance. Many people are of the opinion that their will lose their case if they move their car prior to the arrival of the police. This is not true. The police can determine the point of impact . Moving your car off the road will prevent further damage to your car and further personal injury to you and your family. Also if you are on I-95, the Merritt or some major highway do not stand on the shoulder or near the roadway. Our office has had numerous cases where a person who was in a car has their vehicle or the person hit again by a passing motorist.
