Car accidents can happen to anyone at any time. Any type of car crash can do serious damage to the vehicle and cause lasting, life-changing injuries. Car accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, including speeding, traffic gridlock, negligence, recklessness and unsafe driving. To protect oneself from car accidents, it is important to know what types of crashes are most common so that they can be avoided.
The following are the most common types of car accidents:
Rear-end collisions- These types of accidents occur when a driver is following another car to closely and the other driver suddenly brakes or slows down. Rear- end collisions are the most common type of car accidents. Whiplash is a common injury associated with rear- end collisions. In such accidents, fault is usually attributed to the driver that rear-ends the other car.
Vehicle rollover- These types of accidents are extremely dangerous. Rollover accidents occur when a vehicle flips over onto its side or roof. SUVs (sport utility vehicles) are easily prone to such accidents. These accidents can lead to serious injuries such as spinal cord injuries and brain trauma.
Hit-and-run accidents- Hit- and run accidents occur when a driver hits a vehicle and leaves the accident scene. In such types of accidents, it can be very difficult to determine the identity of the driver or vehicle.
Side impact collisions- Often called “T-bone” or “broadside” collisions, side impact collisions occurs when the side of a car is hit. In this type of accident, the driver’s head hits something to its side like the door or window, leading to spinal injuries or concussions. Side impact collisions are more dangerous than any other types of accident due to the fact that no air bags protect the driver or any passengers from the sideways blow.
Sideswipe collisions- Sideswipe collisions occur when two cars are in parallel touch. Damages and injuries are typically minimal in such accidents as the cars just “swipe” each other.
Head-on collisions- Head-on collisions occur when the front ends of two cars hit each other. These types of collisions are often fatal.
Single-car accidents- Single-car accidents occur when a vehicle strikes an object such as a wall, pole, tree, or fire hydrant. In certain situations, these accidents may involve pedestrians and other innocent bystanders. This type of accidents can cause injuries to the driver, passengers and pedestrians and can often cause extensive property damage.
Multi-vehicle collisions- Multi-vehicle collisions are accidents involving many vehicles and can often occur on highways and freeways. In this type of accidents the vehicle can be impacted multiple times, making it difficult to escape. Determining fault is also difficult in these cases.
